Lu’au Kalamaku

In Lihue. Hundreds of people would end up at tables in a big tent – a very good thing since it rained a lot of the time.

There was entertainment before the meal with the big show afterward:

Tubing

This adventure was so much fun. We drove to the warehouse where

is located. We signed a lengthy waiver and were fitted with helmets and gloves. 14 of us plus our guide Sofia got into the back of an open-air truck and were transported to the starting point. Once we left the paved road, we continued over a bumpy dirt track. The first stop was a scenic overlook of Mount Waialeale, a shield volcano shrouded in clouds, the wettest spot on Earth at 450 inches/year.

The starting point is just ahead, through the stand of Chinese timber bamboo.

It started raining as we got started, warm rain and it didn’t last long.

At times, it was like bumper cars except you have no control of your vehicle. You would bump into a wall, bank, or another tuber and start spinning. Sometimes, the float was slow and easy. Other times, you were going faster through “rapids.” It was never scary though.

75% of the trip was through tunnels – time to turn on the headlamps.

The take-out spot:

We had a picnic lunch afterwards before heading back. Great adventure. Highly recommended.

Tuesday October 18. Diana and Coletha:

Short story: late Tuesday morning, Agueda had her locked bike stolen in front of Ross at Natomas Marketplace. Later that afternoon, Brenda spotted her bike next to a sleeping homeless man near Inderkum High School, called Agueda who drove over and verified the bike was indeed hers. They quietly picked up the bike and walked away. Agueda got her bike back minus a few accessories about 4 hours after it was stolen. In the early evening, Brenda went for a bike ride with Jim and Paul who titled the incident “Crime fighter by day, bike rider at night.”

Breathe Bike Trek

Originally scheduled for mid-September but postponed because of the Mosquito Fire, the annual Breathe Bike Trek happened this morning. Quite a few people couldn’t make it today which left a last-minute opportunity for Leo to ride. The Good Jibes team: Mellissa, Leo and I rode the 34-mile medium route together which was good because it was easy to miss a turn and then Mellissa got a flat tire about 2 miles from the end. I rode back to the start and drove back to pick her up.

At lunch after the ride. Sue Schooley, me, Sue Teranishi, Mellissa Meng.

Big applause to Mellissa who rode a regular bike and climbed 1500+ feet today in the foothills around Loomis, Newcastle and Penryn. Leo and I rode e-bikes .. climbing was not a problem.
