To Oahu

On Saturday we flew to Oahu in the afternoon and took a shuttle to Aulani – a Disney resort.
1000 rooms, about 4000 registered guests (97% occupancy!).

Thais, Lenin and family arrived a few hours earlier along with the Krals: Jeff, Leah (Lenin’s sister), their two kids and Cameron (daughter of Lenin’s brother Connie). We are a group of 12!

Maui – day 3

Early morning departure to go snorkeling off the coast of Lana’i.
97% of the island is privately owned.
We were one of 3 tourist boats which meant there were LOTS of people in the water.
I did not snorkel. I’ve never done it before and the captain’s explanation about all the things you have to do before/during/after jumping in the water from the deck of the boat did not inspire me to try. Adrienne:
Heading back to Maui.
Lahaina:
In the evening, we had dinner at Duke’s.

Maui – day 2

The walk from our building toward the lobby:
There are different vendors each day in the lobby.

We spent most of the day in Lahaina poking into every store that looked interesting. By the afternoon, it was hot! – time for the best shave ice, at Ululani’s.
Mac nut ice cream on the bottom, then packed with shave ice and drizzled with 3 flovors.
Every evening there’s a free hula show and music in the courtyard.

After finishing one of these mai tais, I was able to get up on stage and learn the hula for Hukilau – oh boy!

Maui – day 1

When I asked if I could take a picture of the cockpit, the captain got up so I could sit in his seat and he could take a picture. I didn’t expect that at all. The co-captain is to the left.
Our first stop was just a couple of miles from the airport – Discount Fabric Warehouse. Check out the sign on the door – Attention. Final Week. Store Closing. Nooooo! Good news, they are moving to another location but don’t know when it will open. I was lucky to arrive this week!

We are staying at the Kaanapali Beach Club. The view from our balcony, if you look to the right:

From the sewing cave

About a week ago, one faithful reader let me know I hadn’t blogged in a while and nudged me to get going. I know! Sometimes I get behind, especially when I’m focused on something. That something this time was not having clothes that fit and a trip to Hawaii was a few short weeks ahead. I tried to buy some shorts at my favorite store, but that didn’t work out and I find it impossible to go from store to store searching for clothes to buy. I am not a good shopper. I used to make my own shorts and pants – I decided to take the time to figure it out again. I had lots of fabric already in my stash. The results:

The first pair in dark brown denim (folded) were too big 😦 then came the camo and khaki shorts. The khaki with dark brown meant I was running out of those fabrics – but at least the shorts fit. The real goal was to use the pink and blue denim. That was done. The I began obsessing about tops – I got mixed results in that department which is frustrating because I’ve been sewing for 60 years. How can I screw up so often? The results:

The two on the floor are failures – I followed the pattern directions carefully but it was no good (I want to blame the pattern). The yellow one fits BUT not below the waist 😦 The other two are ok. And these also turned out ok:

I didn’t buy ANY fabric for the above projects and my stash has been considerably depleted. Yay. You know what that means, though, right? I am now free to buy more fabric.

Bike ride

The faithful three met at 8 am for an 18-mile roundtrip bike ride, all of Jack Rabbit Trail plus a detour through Regency Park.

Peter Price, Pat Johnson, Phil Jackson

Poor Pat got a flat tire almost at our farthest-away point. He was able to call one of our neighbors to come pick him up. He said it was the first flat tire ever.
