Auburn Elementary bike rodeo

An hour later, I was at Auburn Elementary for their annual Family Festival. Elle arrived early to set up the course on her own since I was finishing up in Placerville. We had one side of the playground for the bicycle skills course.

Maria’s Mexican Tacos provided food – they’re a local attraction in Auburn. Several locals came to the school just to pick up dinner.

A very long day, but every moment was fun. Even the 45-minute drive back to E Nicolaus. This was the last WALKSacramento event for this season.

Sierra Elementary Bike Club ride #1

This ride was a total success! We did have a few hiccups, but Alyson Fox handled each situation quickly and efficiently. When we did our personal safety check, we discovered Louis’ helmet was not functional and we had no spare; sadly he couldn’t ride with us. Entering the roadway from the yogurt shop, climbing the short hill, making the left turn, and entering the trail all went perfectly. Here’s our whole group except for Alyson who rode “sweep” – the last rider. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Pre-ride for Sierra Elementary Bike Club

Next Thursday will be the last club meeting for this school year and we’re going on an off-campus bike ride. Hurray! Sometimes it’s difficult to get permission from the school to do an event like this – insurance, liability, and safety concerns. It’s very important that I do a pre-ride to understand what challenges may occur and which teachable moments are best.

We will meet at Whistle Stop Yogurt Shop,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
carefully cross a busy road in individual drivers of our own vehicles (with parent help on both sides of the street but letting students make their own decisions about the right time to enter the roadway).

Then a short uphill, which will may be a challenge for some bicycle drivers,
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
followed by: scan, signal, scan, and merge to a left turn lane and the beginning of the El Dorado Trail.

And then my plan fell apart when a creepy-looking man began walking the trail ahead of me. Nope, not going to do it. The end of the pre-ride.

Loopalooza in Davis

This was the final club ride and meeting of the Leroy Greene Academy Bike Club. Fundraising allowed all train tickets to be purchased for a one-way ride to Davis. The organizers of Loopalooza gave us Back-to-Sac tickets for the train ride back, a program sponsored by Davis merchants.

This school year, the LGA Bike Club existed only because of a generous donation from a local church. All funding sources to keep this program going have dried up, so this event was probably the last one for this bicycle club coach. I will miss this group of boys a lot and the supportive dads and ex-teachers who came along on our rides, but especially I will miss working with Megan McManus, the staff advisor.

Leroy Greene Academy Bike Club

Sadly, this is all I got today. No one showed up. Everyone is busy, interests are changing. Baseball is still happening and one of our faithful club members is on the team. Another just got a guitar and is going to his friend’s house this afternoon to start a band.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Walk audit at Del Paso Elementary

Robertson Community Center was filled with people from various agencies who wanted to learn about and participate in a walk audit sponsored by WALKSacramento. I went mostly because Del Paso Elementary is in TRUSD and I taught CBET there a couple of years ago.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There were four teams who walked four different routes around Del Paso Elementary noting the barriers to walking and bicycling to and from school.

Ione Bike Rodeo

This was a very early and cold morning. Ione is about a 2-hour drive from E Nicolaus, especially when stopping in downtown Sacramento to pick up LCI Elle and Miha (WALKSacramento). We arrived early to set up the course and got the see the excellent Safety Patrol at work helping students getting to class on time every morningOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
The local fire department demonstrated the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet by doing a a melon drop.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Every student who brought a bicycle to school came to the bike rodeo, all others went to learning stations for nutrition and pedestrian safety.
