Trail etiquette

Even if there was no requirement for physical distancing, this is not the correct way to use local trails:

And the dog was not leashed. I now find the safest place to ride on the streets. Very little traffic and people are on sidewalks.

SABA Christmas party

SABA = Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates. Last year I was in charge of three after-school bike clubs at schools in West Sacramento and I’ve volunteered for their bike valet service a time or two – all sponsored by SABA. Bike Dog Brewing Co was the perfect place for a get-together.

Bike rides

On Tuesday I went for a 6.5-mile test ride to see how happy my ankle would be afterwards. It was ok, not great but ok. I sent out an email to the Four Season bicycle interest group. On Wednesday, Pete rode with me.

Sunflowers in Hummingbird Park

On Thursday, Jean-Marie and Ingrid rode.

Lunch at Gina’s

Gina and I have taught Project Ride Smart together, periodically, for the last few years. She is a really creative person who makes jewelry and other decorative items by up-cycling bicycle parts.
Her second bedroom is her studio. I love seeing other people’s work spaces. She’s very well organized.

Project Ride Smart

Deanna and Christy are teaching this session at Natomas Park Elementary.

38 kids signed up for today’s after-school coaching session and I was asked to help out. Only 10 showed up which was a good thing. They were all quite successful by the end of the one-hour session.

Jibe

Today, I worked at Jibe for a few hours. (Hurray, an opportunity to get out of the house and do something productive). Three LCIs worked on their final certification to teach Project Ride Smart by presenting classroom lessons and receiving feedback from Mellissa and me. Here Veronica, Dana, Lorge, and Mellissa get ready for the street rides; I drove and followed them, getting out at the various teaching stops:

Bike rides

It’s been too hot to ride lately, but on Friday the high was in the low 80s so I invited the Four Seasons Westshore bicycle-interest group on a couple of rides that I’ve done before. It was windy and rather chilly at 8 am for the first ride. My neighbor Lorraine rode the 4-mile Public art ride #1:
The second ride came next: 6-mile Public art ride #2. My next door neighbor Colleen came on this ride.
On Saturday morning, Helen arrived at 8 am for a 7-mile ride to the Natomas Farmers Market. A 20-mph north wind was blowing – ugh – the tailwind part of our ride was quite nice, but the headwind part was a challenge.

The fresh spring peas were worth it!

Westfield Village Bike Club

This was my last bike club meeting at Westfield Village with its most faithful member, AngelLillie. I was so happy Deb Banks rode with us.

Riding with AngelLillie has been such a delightful experience that I wanted our last meeting to be special, so the three of us rode 2 miles to Joe’s Crab Shack in Old Sacramento.

Molly Wagner from WALKSacramento joined us.

On our way back,
I noticed some smoke, we stopped, evaluated, and called 911 …
a small crowd gathered,
the fire department arrived,
and put out the fire.
After being asked a few questions by a fireman, we rode on to where AngelLillie lived. I smiled as I listened to AngelLillie invent various scenarios about being heroines on bicycles, riding around, saving the community. When we said our final goodbyes, one of AngelLillies’s neighbors came by. She said, “We just saved all of West Sacramento from being burned down.” Smile. I will miss you AngelLillie.

Project Ride Smart – the LAST day

Sue Schooley and Lorge Quant presented the day’s activities. Not a street ride but other fun things you can do on a bicycle.
My helpers for the Slow Race for one class: repeatedly they raced to shout “On your mark, get set, go slow!”
The person who crossed the finish line LAST without touching a foot to the ground was the winner.

Lorge did Rock Dodge (with mixed success):
Sue did the Bean Drop.
