This was the final club ride and meeting of the Leroy Greene Academy Bike Club. Fundraising allowed all train tickets to be purchased for a one-way ride to Davis. The organizers of Loopalooza gave us Back-to-Sac tickets for the train ride back, a program sponsored by Davis merchants.

First stop, pastries from Village Bakery:

Adam’s 5th grade teacher from Two Rivers joined us for part of the ride.

Station 1 (of ten on the 12-mile bicycle trail loop around the city of Davis):

This station featured about 15 different (or wacky) types of cycles:

Face (or arm painting) station:

I maintained a safe distance from all the action at this station:

Leaving our chalk messages:

Skills station. Our club members were experts here, including the figure-8.

Bicycle repair station:

Lunch before we head for the train station:

This school year, the LGA Bike Club existed only because of a generous donation from a local church. All funding sources to keep this program going have dried up, so this event was probably the last one for this bicycle club coach. I will miss this group of boys a lot and the supportive dads and ex-teachers who came along on our rides, but especially I will miss working with Megan McManus, the staff advisor.

What a fun day!
IIDA Merge – afternoon
IIDA = International Interior Design Association organized this 5th annual “creative collaboration event” where local designers from the top Sacramento architectural and interior design firms turn architectural materials into chic fashion ensembles in just 3.5 hours. This fund-raising event benefited Sacramento’s Student Design Awards. Thais invited me to be a part of the team from LPAS, the firm she works for.
We met at Tsakopoulos Library Galleria on I St in Sacramento at 1:30pm for instructions,

followed by a mad dash to another room to select a pile of materials to work with.

The 12 participating teams were divided in half and sent to two large workrooms. The materials our team selected included burgundy upholstery fabric, gold carpet squares, beige diamond-pattern wallpaper (that looked a bit like leather), and white countertop sample tiles:

Marci, our fearless leader, #1 dress designer and sewer (I was second sewer and did exactly what she told me to do):

Those are “cupcakes” on the skirt made from the wallpaper and fiber strands of carpet and upholstery fabric.
Time for our model to get her hair and make-up done even while her jewelry was being fitted.
My sewing station is to the left while Marci worked to the right.
This is Gretel (without Hansel) ready for the fashion show.
I had so much fun and this is closest I’ll ever get to a Project Runway-like event. (To my closest friends and family: if I’m ever bed-ridden and need to spend hours watching TV, please figure out some way for me to watch every episode of every season of Project Runway. I will be happy and entertained for many hours, I promise.)

Walk audit at Del Paso Elementary
Robertson Community Center was filled with people from various agencies who wanted to learn about and participate in a walk audit sponsored by WALKSacramento. I went mostly because Del Paso Elementary is in TRUSD and I taught CBET there a couple of years ago.

There were four teams who walked four different routes around Del Paso Elementary noting the barriers to walking and bicycling to and from school.

Walking with a friend
Caroline is back from her Asian adventure. Caroline spent about 3 months touring Southeast Asia. I almost went with her on this trip, but when final plans were being determined last November, my mother became ill and all my attention went to her. A determined and brave Caroline went on her own. She recorded her adventure at wulzenadventures.blogspot.com if you’d like to check it out. We met at Raley Field in West Sacramento.

We started walking and talking,

and walking … past yoga groups,

steam engines in Old Sacramento,

and stand-up paddleboarders on the Sacramento River,

when all of a sudden, 3 hours had gone by and we were a few miles from our starting point. We turned around, headed back and talked about when we might get together again. We reached no decision on that last point, except that we WILL see each other again and, in the meantime, we will think and dream about when and where we might travel together. Someday.
Ione Bike Rodeo
This was a very early and cold morning. Ione is about a 2-hour drive from E Nicolaus, especially when stopping in downtown Sacramento to pick up LCI Elle and Miha (WALKSacramento). We arrived early to set up the course and got the see the excellent Safety Patrol at work helping students getting to class on time every morning
The local fire department demonstrated the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet by doing a a melon drop.

Every student who brought a bicycle to school came to the bike rodeo, all others went to learning stations for nutrition and pedestrian safety.

Bike Club at Sierra Elementary
Today a drive to Placerville for bike club. This is a great group of kids, they are learning bicycle driving skills rather quickly and I have to make weekly lessons more challenging whenever possible.

At right is Alyson Fox, staff advisor and an excellent support for the bike club. Alyson keeps track of attendance, waivers, communications with parents and principal. I’m a lucky coach.
