CBET in TRUSD

I checked in with Mike Wade this morning. His CBET class at Smythe Academy ended today. All participants received a certificate of completion. Mike is greatly loved at this school, by students, staff members, and principal Ken Dandurand.

And then I drove to Auburn. There are lots of bicycle education activities this week (which might explain why I get so far behind on this blog sometimes. Bear with me, Faithful Followers.)

CBET at Smythe Academy

Mike Wade invited me attend today because he had a great guest speaker. Like Elizabeth at Kohler, Mike’s students love him.

A true success story, Eduardo came to the United States from Mexico as the child of a migrant laborer with no English. He retired as a captain in the Sacramento Metro Fire Department and now has a successful business as a translator.

His story was fascinating to all of us. His message was work hard, learn English, keep striving to achieve.

CBET at Kohler

Meet Elizabeth Arias who teaches at Grant High School but goes to Kohler School in North Highlands two afternoon/week to teach CBET. I was invited to their graduation and fiesta.

Elizabeth’s students love her and attendance was so good, her classes have been extended for another 32 hours.

I love the boy in the orange t-shirt who wanted so badly to stand by his mother (in the gray striped t-shirt) for the picture, but her left hand gestured “stay where you are.”

CBET

Besides coaching bicycle clubs, I’ve also been working part-time for TRUSD providing support for 14 teachers at 17 schools teaching Community Based English Tutoring. On Monday, I learned how teachers can easily put their attendance on a Google doc and click one button to share with Sonya at the district office.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
On Tuesday, I visited the CBET program at Sierra View taught by Svetlana,

Kohler taught by Elizabeth,

and Garden Valley taught by Marco.

And thanks to Mike Wade teaching at Smythe for sending me these pictures of his students working hard:

CBET Training

Mike Wade and I gave a CBET (Community Based English Tutoring) training back on Dec 8 and were asked to repeat it for the final wave of teachers who will be teaching in schools. Graciela Garcia Torres, Director of the EL Department, introduced this year’s program.

It’s always so much fun to work with Mike. He was Justin’s 3rd AND 4th grade teacher, which Justin didn’t enjoy so much, although Mike and I had a great time writing notes back and forth to each other on his homework.

And, by a round-about way, I am now a part-time independent contractor with TRUSD. The scope of work I submitted was accepted and will support ALL the teachers teaching CBET. In addition, I will try to expand EL services into school libraries, computer labs, and Sacramento Public Libraries. And whatever else I can come up with!
