Beautiful house in midtown.

A fundraiser for SABA.

Brief presentations by Phoebe Ward Waller and Kendra Ramsay, Executive Director of CalBike.

The appeal by SABA board member Sue Teranishi. Break out your debit cards folks!

Fun party! Beautiful Christmas tree.

Ride Districts 1 and 3

I’ve been working on this project for a while, hoping to encourage Active Transportation Commissioners, N Natomas residents and all interested bike riders to actively learn more about cycling infrastructure. Mellissa and Anya from Jibe were especially supportive. We met at Orange Theory at the corner of Arena Blvd and Stemmler Dr, the border between City of Sacramento Districts 1 and 3. Special thanks to Ron Brasel, ATCommissioner from District 8, for participating. *A note about the first picture. The woman on the left, facing left, in the neon yellow jacket, is Marsha, a friend of Cheryl’s, who lives in Ohio. We first met on the bike and barge trip in the Netherlands in 2022. So much fun to see her again.

To my great surprise, 40 people showed up. A very good turnout.

Heading east on Del Paso Rd.

On Arena Blvd at the top of the overpass over I-5. We prepared to descend as a total group – safety in numbers. Standing to the left is Pierson from SABA, a great help on a large group ride.

On E Commerce approaching Del Paso Rd:

At the site of the future Bike Campus which Jibe hopes to complete at some point in the future.

Jackrabbit Trail and Club Center Dr – the most troublesome crossing in N Natomas because there’s no legal way to cross Club Center to continue on the trail.

Almost finished. Riding along I-80, headed to the bike/ped bridge near Peregrine Park.

Thank you Brenda and Jonathan for contributing many of the above pictures.

Ride to Davis

Five of us rode in from N Natomas and met the SABA team at the Tree House Cafe in W Sacramento on Saturday morning.

We rode W Capitol Ave, with great bicycle lane markings, to the Yolo Causeway along I-80. Three miles of loud traffic noise on your left side.

Flat tire #1: Laurie. She had everything needed to change out the tube.

Flat tire #2 was … my bike. And I don’t carry anything to fix a flat. While the group continued on to the US Bicycling Hall of Fame, I walked to a nearby bike shop who fixed my flat tire quickly.

We all met at the train station and took the 12:43 train back to Sacramento.

Great ride! Lots of fun and we rode over 30 miles. Me, Agueda, BarbaraL, Brenda, Laurie:

Huge thanks to Pierson, Deb and Jeremiah from SABA.

Bike Doc

at The Club at Natomas Park. I signed up at the last minute to be the receptionist at Jibe’s Bike Doc this morning. 4 mechanics (Robert, Dennis, Rob, Ken) repaired 45 bikes. 90% of the people who had an online appointment showed up, which meant many walk-ups had to be turned away. The no-show rate has been as high as 50%, walk-ups had a better chance at getting a bike repaired.

Thank you Dennis for spending a very long time assembling a brand new trike – a birthday present from two daughters to their mother hoping she will become more active.

SABA Social Ride

We met, not at Chocolate Fish-the sunny side of the street, but rather in front of shady Marie’s Donuts (great donuts btw).

I rode in from N Natomas with Coletha, Diana, and BarbaraB:

Pierson welcoming everyone:

We rode to W Sacramento where the Sycamore Trail will be extended southward with a bike/pedestrian bridge over I-80.

Looking through a gap in the fence:

We crossed to the other side of I-80 using Westacre Rd. This bridge should be finished by fall 2024.

The group made their way to the Clark Branch Trail then to Lenise’s Cafe. The temperatures were climbing so we broke off early to head back to N Natomas. A very good 32-mile ride for BarbaraB and me.

P&PE

The Personnel and Public Employees committee reviews and interviews applicants for positions on City boards, commissions and committees. In addition to that, the Active Transportation Commission had to first present their 2022 report and recommendations before it could go to the City Council. This afternoon was the meeting, 3 pm today, City Hall, agenda item #7. Jennifer Donlon-Wyant, Transportation Planning Manager began.

Ali Doerr-Westbrook, ATC Chairperson, made the presentation.

JDW (as she’s informally known) took this picture of Ali and her supporters in the audience: Isaac Gonzalez/ATC Commissioner, BarbaraL, me, Ali Doerr Westbrook/ATC Commissioner, Deb Banks/ATC Commissioner and Executive Director of SABA, Jim Houpt/ATC Commissioner.

More about BarbaraL. Bless her heart, she was the only person (out of 134 people who receive an email every Saturday with information and the ride schedule) to volunteer to attend this meeting at City Hall. She had to work at the downtown library today and I wanted to attend the SABA staff meeting in the morning, so we left at 9 am and rode to downtown. Before the P&PE meeting started, I rode to the library and was able to lock my bike in her office. Off to the meeting, then the ride back to … Chevy’s on the River. Stacey and Elaine rode over to meet us. Thank you BarbaraL for being an in-person advocate for active transportation. Guacamole freshly made for the table:

MiBM celebration ride

Three separate groups met at Peregrine Park .. in the shade.

16 riders – the biggest group I’ve ever led. Thankfully, there were many who had taken a Jibe class with me and I encouraged them to give group riding tips when needed.

Starting out, the bridge over a creek,

and then up and over I-80.

Bike path along Garden Highway almost to Discovery Park.

Crossing the Tower Bridge over the Sacramento River, taking the lane.

There was a huge party at Bike Dog Brewing in W Sacramento sponsored by SABA and REI to celebrate the closing days of May is Bike Month.

Thank you REI for buying all REI members (me) a beer.

Gina – friend. fellow LCI, and the designer and creator for Gadget Girl Goods:

Time to head back.

On the boardwalk in Old Sacramento. 8 miles to go.

Great ride. We made some new friends, had a great time and rode 25 miles.

The Bicycle Nomad

Many people rode their bikes to REI for a presentation by Erick Cedeno.

Erick Cedeno has bicycle-toured from Vancouver BC to Tijuana MX, followed the Underground Railroad from New Orleans to Niagara Falls, and followed the trail of two bicycle expeditions by the USArmy in 1896 and 1897 by 20 black soldiers from Fort Missoula to St Louis. A very interesting presentation.

Training video

The City of Sacramento is adding five e-trikes to their library of things at the Colonial Heights branch.

Before checking out an e-trike, users must acknowledge that they’ve watched the training videos provided so they know how to operate, charge, lock, and properly use the bike on the street.

Pierson, Becky and I met a couple of city employees at Colonial Heights library and we went through a script of short video clips to demonstrate all the elements.

I demonstrated how to use the (very heavy) lock while being filmed.

Becky, friend and fellow LCI, she’s great to work with.

Ride the City

This ride started at City Hall and with a planned ending time of 8:00 in Oak Park. I did not want to ride back to the start point alone and later in the evening, so I drove to the end point early and rode to City Hall, arriving way too early of course since I didn’t know how this would work exactly.

Jennifer Donlon-Wyant organized this ride with City engineers and planners to tour bicycling infrastructure in Downtown Sacramento. 91 people signed up however only half that number showed up – whew, managing 90+ people on a downtown ride would have been challenging. Thanks to Deb and Rob from SABA for providing help at major intersections.

Stop #1 to learn about improvements to P, Q, and 21st Streets and the new ACE train station which will have no gas-burning vehicle parking but upgraded access for active transportation users.

Our final stop near Broadway in Oak Park:

What a great ride and I learned a lot. Bicycle infrastructure continues to grow in Sacramento.
