Ride with City Staff

About 40 people met in front of City Hall at 5:00.

SABA friends – Tyler, Pierson, Rob, Deb:

Thank you Brenda for coming with me. We drove to the end point, then rode to City Hall.

Known by everyone as JDW – Jennifer Donlon Wyant, Active Transportation Specialist for the Department of Public Works, City of Sacramento – got the event rolling.

We stopped periodically to see improvements being made by the City to make bicycling safer.

A quick-build project at Broadway & Martin Luther King Blvd. Vertical delineators to channel traffic, slow things down, and make the crossing safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Ride to Velorama

We met at the bike/ped bridge over I-80 near Peregrine Park – Lennore, Brenda, Cheryl, Millan, me:

and rode to Bike Dog Brewing in W Sacramento to celebrate Velorama. REI gave members, and those who became members, a free drink ticket. Bici Perro – a very good Mexican lager.

Alternate choice, wine from (Dusty) Baker Family Wines:

Lunch, shopping, and visiting before heading back.

Ride to Bike Fest

I led a Jibe-organized ride to Bike Fest at William Pond Park on the American River Bike Trail. There were 16 of us.

Kathy was our mechanic, Laurie rode sweep. We left from Peregrine Park and rode mostly trails. We stopped periodically to regroup, time to visit and hydrate. Almost to the Guy West Bridge at Sac State:

Project Ride Smart

Wednesday, day 2 of street rides. Becky reviewing hand signals while Gina gets the jerseys ready.

Thank you to all volunteers: a parent of a 5th grader, Paul, and Laura.

I rode in the park with the first Red group while Becky worked one-on-one with a student.

For the next group of students, Becky went for a ride in the park with a group of students while I stayed on campus and … hurray … got Ramon riding independently. When Becky got back, and came around the corner, Ramon set off from the opposite corner of the blacktop. Such a sweet boy, his classmates cheered him on, so did Becky. Ramon was so happy and proud.

Thursday, day 3 of street rides. Today’s team: Laura/volunteer sweep, LCIs Gina, Deanna, Pierson:

I rode with the Pierson’s red group.

A great picture to demonstrate the importance of having a sweep. This wobbly rider was far behind the rest of the red group.

Adult Learn to Ride

Level 3. The students who came to tonight’s class needed to have basic bike handling skills. We reviewed past learning and taught scanning, and the multi-step left turn. We had 3 students 2 LCIs, and 2 volunteers. Kathy and Lennore took the group out for a ride:

Project Ride Smart

at Witter Ranch Elementary, about 1.5 miles from my house. I was a volunteer sweep for street rides today. BeckyG and Deanna were the lead LCIs.
