RLEHS Sunday Social

The Throwdown has turned out to be an easy and popular activity at our Sunday Socials. I’m surprised that there have been so many volunteers willing to participate. This month, Farmer Deno from The Natomas Farm provided fresh lemons:

I won this time! Lemon Raspberry Trifles. Everyone was served 1/40 of the trifle in this picture, but in tiny plastic trifle footed bowls with just enough room for ONE raspberry on top.

Sophia plays basketball like a girl

There was some parental coaching this past week and another look at the Superbowl commercial for “play like a girl.” I could really see a difference in how Sophia played this week. Black jersey this week, Sophia is #15.

When in doubt, look for the bright pink tennis shoes.

In between quarters, Avery practiced his dribbling. He’s really good.

CBET

Besides coaching bicycle clubs, I’ve also been working part-time for TRUSD providing support for 14 teachers at 17 schools teaching Community Based English Tutoring. On Monday, I learned how teachers can easily put their attendance on a Google doc and click one button to share with Sonya at the district office.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
On Tuesday, I visited the CBET program at Sierra View taught by Svetlana,

LGA audit of W El Camino bike trail crossing

7:15 am: it was early and chilly. Treats and hot chocolate helped.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
When exiting the bike trail on the north side
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
the expectation is the driver/walker will go 100 feet east and cross at the crosswalk
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
then go 100 feet west to rejoin the trail on the other side of a divided 4-lane road with heavy 50-mph traffic.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Observations:
1. 50% of the users from 7:15-8:15 crossed illegally.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
2. No students used this route to get to school.
3. Cars don’t stop for anyone waiting at the crosswalk.
4. Neither teacher nor students were late for school.

Auburn Elementary Bike Club

We practiced the difference between riding in a group like a train versus riding as individual drivers of vehicles.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
We also practiced arriving at a stop sign individually, doubling up at the limit line, then taking off together and stringing back out to single file. On our first club ride, we must negotiate a lighted intersection across Hwy 49 with a relatively short straight-across lane. I want our group to get through the light quickly and efficiently. Practicing ahead of time is essential.

There was also a figure eight to practice yielding and bicycle control.

TRUSD Annual Food Show

Approximately 130 elementary and high school students and their parents were invited to North Ave School today to taste more than 30 new items the district is considering offering next year as part of the school breakfast and lunch programs and providing feedback.

I drove the fire truck – a rather chilly open-air ride by the way. Digger, from the River City Cats:
