Birthday #77

This year, I decided to start my 24-hour birthday six hours early. On Wednesday, I went to dinner with Terri, Sarah (Terri’s daughter), and Elaine to Mulvaney’s Building and Loan.

They gave us a “special” location – the wine room. It was quiet, all conversation could be heard.

Thursday morning and afternoon was filled with text messages (even one from Paris), cards and flowers.

My official birthday ended at 5:30 when the Active Transportation Commission meeting started.

Ride to Berkeley

Leo, BarbaraL and I drove to the Richmond Ferry Terminal on Sunday morning.

Ford vehicles used to be manufactured in this building.

Lunch at La Note. And I was able to make a quick stop at my favorite Stonemountain and Daughter before riding back to Richmond on the Bay Trail.

This ride might become an annual birthday ride for Barbara and I. Our birthdays are just 6 days apart. 23 miles total.

Woodshop

Thais gave me, for my birthday, an experience: make a cutting board at a local woman-own woodshop.

I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time.

Clamped and ready to sit for a while. We need to schedule another session to finish. So much fun!

Learn 2 Ride

at Miller Park on Saturday morning. Every class is different and so much fun.

So cool, a train from Old Sac chugged by, passengers waving.

This week, ~13-year old twins came to our class. Shh, don’t tell anyone, but our classes are never full and participants frequently get a 2-hour private lesson for $25. Kathy and Barbara go through the basics:

As it turned out, they both knew how to ride. I talked to their mom who told me they wanted to learn the skills needed to ride their bikes to school. We adjusted the plan and taught hand signals, lane positioning, left turn and the box turn.

Lunch with friends

I drove to Jim and Lucy’s then Lucy drove to lunch at Cheesecake Factory. Their van is very cool, open the door and the ramp extends, the wheelchair is tethered at four locations.

Happy Birthday to both of us. I am 7 days younger. Thanks Jim for taking us out to lunch.

Membership meeting

Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates has been having a membership drive. Tonight was a chance to showcase the many part-time employees who work for SABA and the programs and projects which keep SABA going and making a difference.

Deb Banks, Executive Director.

Jibe ride

Saturday morning. We met at Peregrine Park and rode the American River Bike Trail to the Guy West Bridge, crossed the river and took a slightly different route back, going through McKInley Village where we stopped for a group picture at the “rabbit ears”.

Lorge led, Lennore was sweep. The very best time to get a flat tire is on one of our rides. Step back and let the experts fix it fast.

31 miles. Great ride.

Grand opening

of Kaia FIT, a gym about 3 miles from my house.

A few months ago, Tequilla took over ownership of the gym and improvements began immediately. This morning was the grand opening. The Kaia Fit founder and CEO attended along with staff and Councilmember Lisa Kaplan.

I started weight training with Elaine at the beginning of 2025. I’ve made a lot of progress. One example. In January, I could deadlift 10 lbs using dumbbells, last week I lifted 100 lbs using a barbell (lol-just once to set a personal record). Another thing I like, it takes just two hours/week: one hour with Elaine, one hour in the gym at the Lodge. There are also many other benefits, but the one I like the most is .. increased bone density. Elaine, Councilmember Lisa Kaplan, me:
