A year ago this weekend I started weight training. One day at a gym with a coach and one day at the gym at the lodge – one hour each time.

At the lodge gym, a year ago I could do squats with a 10-lb dumbbell, 3 sets of 5 after a few warm-up reps with lighter weights. Now I’m using a 35-lb dumbbell, 3 sets of 7, again after warming up. At the gym with the coach, I use a 45-lb barbell and can do 3 sets of 5. There are three other exercises in the routine. Deadlift is one of my favorites – currently at 85 lbs. Improvement is especially slow for arm exercises.
