Epcot

Because the wind was still howling today, we decided to drive to Orlando and go to Epcot.

Rena and Jerry are Billie’s daughter’s husband’s parents and work part-time as Disney “cast members” (all Disney employees are cast members) at one of the water parks. They were very helpful in making last-minute arrangements for lodging. We were so grateful for all they did for us!

Windy day

The weather wasn’t very good for bicycling today – wind gusts to 25 mph.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Time for a long walk around the Ocean Village grounds.

We also made several stops to stock our kitchen, including a really good outdoor fresh fruit and vegetable market. Billie, “This is one of my favorite places on Earth.”

Roanoke VA to Hutchinson Island FL

The van was packed and the bikes loaded last night.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
4 am (oh my!), we are on the road!

Billie drove 13 hours!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Ah, it’s warmer already.

Our condo is on the 4th floor with a nice view of the ocean in the northern part of Hutchinson Island, closest to the city of Ft Pierce. We will be here two weeks!

To Roanoke VA

Work is over! Time for a vacation. I flew to Roanoke today. Billie, JD, and I have a bicycling adventure ahead.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
There are still a few weeks left to gather walnuts and Justin is now in charge. Most of the picking is done, not many like this:

I’ve got 186 pounds so far and we’re hoping to reach 250 pounds. Using the Nut Weasel this year really made the daily job of gathering the nuts on the ground very easy. No more stooping and crouching.

Post-Halloween party

At Trisha and Richard’s house.

This party only happens every 3 years because it takes a couple of months to build the catacombs, passageways, rooms, cemeteries, and decorate everything in incredible detail across two backyards. The big party was a week ago. Tonight was a smaller, more kid- and family-oriented.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

On the ride back there was some dirt-trail riding – harder than it looks, but enjoyed by everyone who tried it – and totem building.

Alyson and Tristan enjoyed a post-ride ice cream.

As of this afternoon, ALL my jobs are done and there is nothing on the horizon for employment. It’s been a hectic two months so the upcoming break is quite welcome.

This morning, Caroline and I gathered walnuts. With Caroline knocking them out of the trees and me picking them up, we got 12 pounds rather quickly.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sierra Elementary Bike Club

I went early today so I could ride the route we will be using for our final club ride. The road crossing to the bike trail is somewhat tricky – because of the curving road, I don’t think a left turn from the left lane position is a good idea, so students will ride on the right side, stop, then cross when it’s safe.

I made an old-fashioned (ha! from the 50s-70s) newspaper delivery bag for a new bicycling fun activity that looked something like this:

Because the asphalt part of the playground was in use, I set up 5 boxes among the trees. It was HARD to ride on soggy dirt and attempt to throw newpapers at the target. Almost everyone had to stop, throw the paper, then ride on. Attempting to catch the newspapers was almost as much fun.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This is our last on-campus club meeting. Tomorrow is the street ride.
